ACCOMMODATION

The University of Auckland is located right in the centre of Auckland City with lots of accommodation available at all prices. We have also reserved dorm-style rooms (single bed, shared bathroom) on campus for you to book. We recommend this for a hassle-free and affordable alternative to commercial hotels.

See below for booking details.

NEW ZEALAND VISA REQUIREMENTS

New Zealand now requires that all visitors (even those from visa waiver countries) register in advance for an electronic travel authorisation. This can take up to 72 hours to process and requires paying a small fee, so we encourage you to apply online as early as possible to avoid any delays.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Getting around Auckland is easy on foot or by public transportation. Taxis and ride-shares (Zoomy, Uber) are also available. We will endeavor to provide transport options to events off-campus. You should not need a car unless you have sight-seeing plans outside of the city.

GETTING TO/FROM THE AUCKLAND AIRPORT

The best way to get to/from Auckland Airport is with Super Shuttle, a shared-ride shuttle service that goes direct to your door. You can book a space online (recommended) and order a pick-up for your return trip. Walk-ins are possible at the airport but there may be a short wait. Prices to/from the CBD are fixed at $25 pp with discounts for multiple passengers.

By taxi, you can expect to pay at least $50 to get into the CBD. Most taxi companies accept eftpos and credit cards, but it pays to check before you get in. Some good taxi companies include Auckland Co-op Taxis, Blue Bubble Taxis, and Green Cabs.

The cheapest option is to take the Skybus, which goes direct to the CBD. You can buy an adult return trip online for $30, but you can also pay on the bus (AT Hop Card or cash) or at the airport booth (eftpos, credit card).

GETTING AROUND AUCKLAND

The Auckland CBD is hilly and the University campus is uphill from the main shopping street and restaurant area. Short distances can take longer to walk than you may be used to, so leave extra time. We recommend staying on-campus to avoid unnecessary travel.

If you intend to take public transport (as opposed to walking or use taxis/ride-shares), you will find it easiest to buy an AT Hop card from Britomart Transport Centre in Downtown Auckland, since these work across all three modes of transport. It is possible to pay in cash on some routes and at some stations; however, it is much easier to get around with a Hop card. If you intend to pay by cash, many bus drivers will not accept $20 notes or any higher denominations. Once you are here, you can plan your trips with the Journey planner. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can use the AT Mobile app to see how far away the buses are.

SUGGESTED OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMODATION

Below we have listed a small range of accommodation options that can be found within 1.5km (walking distance) of the University of Auckland city campus. We have also made note of places that should be avoided. It is best to book your preferred accommodation soon, as they fill up fast during the summer months. Airbnb is also a viable alternative  to commercial accomodation, but quality varies.
